Welcome to the Small Business Interview Series. Here we will showcase small businesses in Australia/New Zealand that offer products or services that may help our readers to achieve a better work, life and fun balance. Considering each of the 5 pillars; health, wealth, relationships, mental health, community & spirit as part of an overall strategy is super important when making life decisions. Therefore we will not focus on the ‘cheapest’ products or services on the market, but those which will add the most value and will help you stay focused on the bigger picture. We hope you find some awesome new products/services to consider helping you live a happier and more fulfilled life.
Our first guest ever is Erica from Nothing More, Nothing Less. Erica is a big believer in keeping things simple and living a life that you love.
1. Please tell us a bit about your business. What products/services do you offer?
Nothing More, Nothing Less is a home and office organisation service offered in Sydney, Australia that helps customers live with fewer items. Our services also have an added element of being as sustainable as possible.
It isn’t just a general tidy up of the stuff you can see, think of all the documents, photos, bills and forms you have saved on your computer! My digital decluttering service helps to remove unnecessary digital clutter and puts in place a system for the smooth running of new items.
2. Why did you start your business?
Our family recently moved back to Australia and I had to decide what that would mean for our family life. It took quite a while to decide but in the end, I knew it was the right thing to say goodbye to corporate life. My reason for doing so is very simple, I have two beautiful little humans that have changed my world in more ways than I could have ever imagined. Alongside having these little fire-crackers in my life, I have also developed a new perspective on life after returning from living abroad in a very, very small apartment.
Today’s world is a busy one and we are all short on time to do all the things we really love. So, I thought why not create something that is giving, something that can assist everyone in their busy world and yet be adaptable to what they are in need of. I aim to help people live their life with a little less stuff, giving them more time to enjoy what they have and not get stressed about cleaning and organising it all.
3. How do you help people achieve balance in their lives?
It’s really simple; I want people to enjoy life again. Not to wake up in the morning and feel rushed and bogged down by the everyday routine and lose their calm all because someone’s shoes are floating around somewhere in the house or the keys are not in sight. We don’t need these little stresses, especially in the morning. Your mind needs peace and everything else can follow so If I can bring about some form of structure to your home or office then you will have more balance and your mind will start the day with a whole new perspective and a whole lot more enjoyment.
Life is really simple but with only 24 hours in a day it can become filled with work, sport, socialising, general day to day living and well it soon turns to chaos. Sometimes we just need to take some time to find our balance again. This is where I come in! I sort out the chaos and the clutter and remove a little bit of stress along the way.
Removing some clutter enables my customers to really pinpoint where they really want to spend their time and energy. It may be on their own health and fitness, enabling them to have more focused and engaged time with their friends, children and family and keeping their mind at ease knowing that the excess items accumulated in their home over the past few years have moved on out giving them more physical and mental space to enjoy their home.
4. What are your interests outside of your business?
I really enjoy my family fun time; heading out for a hike, going to the beach or a scooter park. I also have a very soft spot for travel and photography. From a very young age, I have loved exploring everything the world has to offer. I like to take time to enjoy my own backyard as well as understanding different cultures across so many countries.
5. How do you ensure you achieve a work/life balance while running your small business?
I love the flexibility of having my own business. It means I can attend swimming lessons, kickboxing classes, and school presentations – I get to have a real balance between work and life. It would seem contradictory for me to tell people how to declutter and organise their lives if I didn’t have my own house in order, so I make an extra effort in this area.
I allocate time for work and when I’m not working I’m with my family and friends enjoying life. Don’t get me wrong, there are moments my mind shifts to work when I am out at the park or swimming and I have a notepad nearby to jot down my ideas so that I can switch back quickly and enjoy that moment, as life does pass us by very fast.
6. Where do you see your business going in the next 5 years?
Currently, I offer both in-house and phone consultation services and will launch a brand new an online program New Year! This exciting new program will allow me to assist more people who either don’t have the time for a face to face consult or are located outside the Sydney region.
I truly do see my business expanding beyond the day to day clutter services that are currently offered. Nothing More, Nothing Less will have an even stronger focus towards sustainability in the next five years because I want to be known for helping people live happily with a little less and ensuring we stop contributing so quickly to the nation’s landfill.
7. What has inspires you most in business or in life?
Inspiration is drawn from so many aspects of one’s life, from family, from friends, from professional relationships. My children are my biggest inspiration; they keep it simple, love to play games, cause chaos, make a mess and most importantly have so much fun along the way. They are not caught up in the mundane routine so many of us end up in, they keep it real and remind and inspire me to do the same.
I’m also inspired by individuals who make an effort to make the world a better place. I am completely in awe of those who overcome the hardship that life has thrown them yet still make the time to help another person at a time when they are not able to help themselves.
8. What is your best piece of advice for someone looking to start their own small business?
The start-up phase will be a challenge – you’ll want to make sure it is a success. If I have learned anything along the way, it’s not about the amount of time you put into the business, it is about the number of valuable contributions you can make. This requires a refreshed and rejuvenated mind, allowing you to be ready to take on the small business challenges.
But – take the leap! It is daunting, yes, but if you have a little fire inside you and you feel it’s the right thing, then go for it! No one ever knows their potential until they test it out!
Miss B here again. Thank you so much Erica for sharing your story about starting Nothing More, Nothing Less and how you not only achieve a balance in your own life, but assist other’s to find their balance as well.
