Frugal, cheap, bargain hunter – whatever you want to call me I love a good deal and you can’t get better than free!

Ever since I stumbled across my first birthday freebie I’ve been systematically signing up for every loyalty program there is. I’ve signed up for those close to me (Sydney) and some when I knew I was going to be travelling in that area during my birthday month (or the timeframe for the voucher).

I keep track of all the programs I’m signed up to on a spreadsheet and make notes against each about what the deal is, when it has to be used by and any restrictions (i.e. a purchase or minimum spend is required). I then also make note of how difficult it was to use; too far away, nothing in the range I liked/needed etc. so I know which programs I can delete from my list and the effort doesn’t outweigh the reward. You might think that when it comes to freebies they are all worth it, but for some my time to travel or the minimum spend required means the deal is a no go for me.

As my title suggests, I had so many freebies this year it took me the whole month to use them – and that is just the ones that made the list. Some were scrapped due to time and circumstances but I’ll still list them below as they may fit into your routine much easier than mine. I always like to start to fit those into my plan that are 100% no obligation freebies. There is no minimum spend, no previous purchase and no other hoops you have to jump through i.e. go in store to collect a card and remember to carry it with you at all times (yes I’m a little bit lazy in the pursuit of all things, even freebies). I then work my way down the list to those that may require the purchase of another main meal (hello Mr B and date night), or a minimum spend in a retail store (which I try to get as close to the $ amount as possible).

Here is my birthday freebie list for use in Sydney. I’ve marked what I used and what I didn’t and often why as well.

Freebies with a catch

Nandos

Freebie: Free quarter chicken and chips

Action: Download the app and register as a member. You’ll get a voucher added to your profile only if you have made a purchase in the past 6 months.

Extra Notes: this year I did actually make a purchase within 6 months for a work lunch with my boss however couldn’t find the app on my phone (must have accidently deleted it). I didn’t make any other purchases so was not eligible this year.

Vapiano

Freebie: 2-4-1 pizza, pasta or salad

Pasta is my favourite food

Action: Register on their website and wait for your voucher to be emailed. Can be redeemed for up to 7 days from birthday.

Lone Star

Freebie: Free meal up to $34.95 with purchase of another main meal

Action: Register on their website and wait for your voucher to be emailed. A booking must be made within the month of your birthday.

Extra Notes: Often places give you the lower priced meal for free, however Lone Star asks you what the birthday person ate and credits that meal – a nice point of difference. There is also a free birthday brownie you can get if you ask; we didn’t know this until we paid so we missed out this year.

There are only 3 on my list here because I mostly don’t see the point in spending extra money to get something for free, though I can say the two I had this year were amazing meals!

Mr B got to ‘eat fresh’ for free

17 total freebies

You may notice that my list is just for food items, with the one exception of Kikki K, a stationary store that sells cute diaries, pens, notepads etc. The reason for this is because I love food and eating out and value the experience of those things. I can use two vouchers and get both myself and Mr B something to eat for free and go for a walk along the river for a fun frugal day out, or eat at a restaurant we enjoy for half (or sometimes less) of the price we would normally spend on a date night.

I have had quite a few retail stores on my list over the years including SABA, Sporscraft, Withcery, Jeanswest, Katies and more, however I found that there was rarely anything in the stores I wanted, and they usually had a minimum spend requirement. Instead of adding extra ‘things’ to my wardrobe that I may never wear, I choose take the time to enjoy the experiences (and food!) after all how many extra places can I visit in just one month 😉

Have you ever been on a birthday freebies adventure? How many did you manage to fit in?
